Every strong business begins with structure.
Over the last decade, I’ve helped organizations across multiple industries build the systems, strategies, and financial foundations that turn disorganization into growth. But my path to this point wasn’t a straight one — it was built through a mix of opportunity, frustration, and perseverance.
My career started when I went back to school for business. One of my professors recognized my strength in accounting and recommended me for a bookkeeping position at a small nonprofit. The office was a converted sewing room — humble, close-knit, and resourceful. I started as a bookkeeping assistant and worked my way up to Administrative Director and Secretary of the Board of Directors.
But despite my dedication, I was micromanaged and overlooked. My ideas weren’t heard, my skills weren’t utilized, and my potential was capped. That experience taught me what poor leadership costs an organization — not just financially, but in lost talent.
From there, I moved to a public authority, hoping for more growth and structure. Instead, I found endless meetings and bureaucracy. Decisions that should have taken weeks stretched into months. It took more than half a year to finalize something as fundamental as employee health insurance. The board members weren’t even part of the organization’s operations, which made progress nearly impossible. I learned that systems alone don’t create efficiency — leadership and accountability do.
My next chapter took me to a growing architectural and engineering firm. It had potential, but the management was too lax and directionless. Employees lacked guidance and development, and processes were largely improvised. I helped implement the structure the company needed — creating systems, policies, and workflows that supported real growth and future acquisitions.
Then came the C-corporation — a cannabis processing company in its infancy. It was an exciting industry, but internally, it was chaos. Financial records were a mess, systems didn’t exist, and communication was inconsistent. I established budgets and forecasts that translated directly into sales goals, aligning financial targets with operational growth. Watching those projections come to life in such a dynamic industry was rewarding, even within an environment that was otherwise toxic and unstructured.
Each experience — both positive and difficult — refined my understanding of what makes a business thrive or collapse. I’ve seen good leadership and poor leadership, agile systems and disorganized ones, and environments that empower versus those that stifle. Through it all, I’ve learned how to recognize the real problems beneath the surface and how to solve them.
Today, I serve as the Chief Financial Officer for that same architectural and engineering firm — the one I helped build before stepping away — and I’m leading its continued growth and stability. Alongside that, I’m expanding into my own consulting and digital product business: By Jocelyn.
